Action Discs
Following the devastating blaze at Grenfell Tower in June 2017 I sought a community in south London where I could share the nationwide minutes-silence. I was unsuccessful in finding a ‘venue’ for this action. There was a church that conducted a minutes silence in an open congregation but I missed it as I had become waylaid at a mosque, asking if there would be a gathering-there wasn’t. Perhaps a shopping centre would have been a better place. I heard that B and Q held a minutes silence.
My desire to share grief and shock in public, with strangers, other citizens, was thwarted. So I made something. A portable disc for delineating, temporarily, a site where I could conduct an action. I tried it in my local park. It felt uncomfortable. I now join the silent walks for Grenfell on the 14th of each month.
Later versions of the Action Discs included instructions, more like Fluxus scores, and they were offered to others as well as used by myself and my family to conduct a variety of different actions.
